| SELECTING A MONUMENT |
| After determining the cemetery rules and regulations, it’s time to create a monument as a tribute to your loved one. There are several choices to make, which we have listed below. Please read these sections to assist you in creating your memorial. |
|
|
| |
| MATERIALS |
| Traditionally, monuments are made of granite. As a material, granite is very durable and will stand the test of time. Drive by any cemetery and you can find granite memorials that have been there for many, many decades. |
| |
| An alternative to a granite monument is one that has a bronze marker on top of a piece of granite. Many cemeteries have begun to require a bronze on granite marker. Bronze markers have a three dimensional appearance and offer a nice alternative to the traditional granite monument. |
| |
| Granite Markers |
| Granite comes in a variety of colors. It is quarried from the ground in places throughout the country and world. Large blocks are pulled from quarries and cut to specific sizes and shapes. The granite is then polished to create a very smooth surface. |
| |
| The designs and names are engraved into the granite using sandblasting equipment that blasts the words and pictures into the granite. The blasted areas are then painted with either black or white paint so that it will stand out and contrast with the granite. |
| |
| Bronze Markers |
| Bronze is a metal alloy consisting mostly of copper and tin. Bronze markers are cast from molds that have been created by our suppliers. Their molds are already formed for the design we offer. The names, dates and any extra emblems are added to the mold to create your personalized bronze marker. The bronze has pins on the back that are inserted into holes drilled in the granite. An adhesive is also used to ensure the bronze will stay fastened to the granite for all time. |
| |
| STYLE |
| After choosing the material for your monument, you will need to pick the style and shape. Bronze memorials are available as flat markers only. If a bronze memorial is what you want, you can proceed to the section on size selection. |
| If you prefer to select a granite memorial, there are four (4) styles to consider. |
|
|
| |
| Flat Markers |
 |
| Flat markers are also known as flush or grass markers. They lie flat on the ground and are usually 3 or 4 inches thick. To set a flat marker, a small section of ground is removed so that when placed, the marker is level or slightly above the ground. Because of their design, flats do not have different shapes to choose from. |
| |
| Bevel Markers |
 |
| A bevel marker is named for the bevel, or drop, from the back of the marker to the front of the marker. Our bevel markers have a 2-inch drop from the back to the front. Bevel markers typically are 6 inches tall (in the back) and are set above ground. Because of their design, bevels do not have different shapes to choose from. |
| |
| Slant Markers |
 |
| Slant markers have a face that is slanted from back to front. The slant is usually 16 inches tall (in the back) and has a drop from back to front of 12 to 14 inches. Some people prefer slant markers to bevel markers because they are taller and the surface is more vertical so that it is easier to see the face of the marker. If you choose a slant marker, you will also need to choose the shape of the top. The following top shapes are available with this type of marker |
- Flat
- Oval
- Serpentine (most common)
|
| |
| Upright Monument |
 |
| An upright is also known as a monument or tablet. An upright tombstone is always set on a base piece to ensure the marker is level and secure. Uprights can be used to mark individual gravesites, companion gravesites, or family plots. This type of memorial has three top shapes to choose from. They are…. |
